Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using such treatments need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle support.
