Sheffield Wednesday Confronts Major Issues, Says Football Regulator

'Our role is integral to football's future' - newly appointed regulator the new chairman

The Championship club's ongoing struggles are seen as a "major concern" and the football regulator is aiming to acquire authority to investigate clubs in such situations, the newly appointed chairman the regulator has announced.

Through a comprehensive talk, the chairman, who was named to the position this week, showed understanding towards the club's followers.

Kogan met with four supporter groups associated with the football team in recent days.

The Championship side have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in this season, with the club failing to pay players on time on multiple instances, including in September.

"Clearly Sheffield Wednesday has been a significant problem for EFL and a significant problem for football," the chairman stated.

"Sheffield Wednesday is one of the historic institutions for the English game and recently we have met fan representatives.

"We are seeking authority... which will enable us to take Wednesday and comparable cases brought to our attention if they require examination and addressed."

Financial Struggles and Ownership Situation

The team's struggling chairman Dejphon Chansiri indicated in the summer he would be open to selling the club at their home ground, but he has been unable to finalize an agreement with prospective buyers.

Delayed salary payments on time in spring months caused limitations by the league officials in June, preventing the club from carrying out any player acquisitions for the next three transfer windows, although the ban was rescinded in the end of the transfer window.

Official's Viewpoint

Kogan said: "The job [of the regulator] is there for the Owls followers, other clubs in similar situations where supporters are loyal to a local institution that has existed throughout their lifetimes in multiple situations.

"I completely understand Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for every team that in modern times have encountered failure, or been close to going to the wall, for causes separate from the fans themselves."

When asked if the regulator could force an owner to sell a club if they are judged inappropriate, the chairman responded: "If your question is 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the response would be once we gather the evidence and understand the situation, we will."

But the chairman emphasized that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be treated as a "last resort" and the oversight body would choose to collaborate with owners.

"The last thing what we want to do is begin intervening in an specific team, an specific proprietor, without being able to work with that owner to try and resolve the issues that the club's facing and the owner's facing," the regulator explained.

"In actuality, when you review the record of football, over the past few decades there have been some owners, a small minority, but some who have been irresponsible in the way which they've been managing their teams and eventually don't wish to take responsibility for the long-term prospects."

'Mistakes could erase significant advances'

The regulator engaged officials from numerous teams to lay out the remit of the authority recently and stated it constituted a "progressive gathering" with a "substantial involvement" from the grassroots to elite level.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because if errors are made, if the world of football gets it wrong, the remarkable development accomplished could disappear incredibly quickly," the regulator warned.

"And that's what nobody wants in the realm of domestic football is a major achievement - we need to continue the progress.

"There's an enormous amount of money flowing into the game and has been channeled for the past two decades, because certainty is lacking it will persist in entering the game, which is one of the reasons why I think we have to maintain a focused outlook on potential dangers and naturally, of the next two or three years."

Top Flight Apprehensions

Elite division representatives objected to the formation of an authority because of fears of a negative impact on the Premier League's sporting equality, but the regulator stated: "I completely endorse the prosperity and expansion as an financial organization of the Premier League.

"Being fully aware of the worry about compromising the top flight as an elite competition of this country. But simultaneously, if you engage with division representatives after today's meeting, they would have had a substantial amount of confidence -and, actually, they have been telling us in private they have a high level of reassurance."

Ideological Links

The regulator remains subject to a "full inquiry" by the official appointments authority after he disclosed making donations to the opposition group in the past.

The 68-year-old provided financial support for Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy's leadership campaign, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I have fully disclosed my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the official body endorsed my nomination," the chairman stated.

"I currently have no participation in any sort of politics."
