A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
